Dual-use self-checkout powers efficient, scalable, and future-ready energy retail
With the SIQMA Smoove self-checkout solution, a new standard is being set for integrated payment processes in modern energy retail. The successful launch of the solution at Shell brand partner Pfennings‘ service station in Mönchengladbach-Güdderath marks an important milestone for the German market and highlights the concept’s international scalability.
With the go-live at PM Pfennings, SIQMA Smoove was integrated for the first time into an existing Shell POS environment in Germany. The implementation went according to plan, and the solution is already proving its value in operation through stability, performance and strong customer acceptance. As self-checkout is still a relatively new concept in the German fuel retail market, the rollout is being introduced in stages. At launch, the focus is on fuel payments, with further use cases such as shop, bistro and car wash purchases to be added gradually based on usage and customer feedback.
The current pilot phase covers a total of ten sites in Germany and builds on existing rollouts in Switzerland as well as initial installations in Austria. It marks the introduction of fully integrated self-checkout to the German fuel retail market.
At the heart of the concept is an innovative dual-use approach: a checkout that can operate in both assisted and self-checkout mode – without additional hardware or structural modifications. For operators, this means greater day-to-day flexibility, for example when customer volumes fluctuate or staff availability is limited. At the same time, investment risk is reduced because existing infrastructure can continue to be used.
SIQMA Smoove is fully integrated into the existing system landscape and will enable customers to pay not only for fuel, but also for car wash services and shop and bistro items in a single transaction. All processes use central data for pricing, promotions and loyalty, creating a seamless checkout experience without disruption between systems – for both customers and operators.
With a view to developing the site into a mobility hub, the approach is designed with future requirements in mind. Looking ahead, charging sessions for electric vehicles can also be integrated into the same payment process. This creates a foundation for new business models, for example by combining charging time with shop offers, while maintaining a consistent user experience across all forms of energy.
The rollouts completed so far show that different regulatory and operational requirements can be mapped onto a single platform. For retail networks, this means faster implementation of new solutions, consistent quality standards and lower operational complexity.
Alongside the introduction of SIQMA Smoove, the first SIQMA OPT 2.0 outdoor payment terminal also went live at the PM Pfennings Schriefersmühle site in Mönchengladbach. The terminal adds another payment option for night-time operations after the shop has closed. Customers can pay for fuel conveniently and securely by card. This further extends service availability at the site.
