Nexus has officially activated new automatic ticket gates at Regent Centre Metro station, marking the first milestone in a £2.1 million program to expand gated stations across the network by 2027. The installation supports North East Mayor Kim McGuinness’ commitment to improving passenger safety and reducing fare evasion through increased staff presence and modernized access control.
More than 1.3 million passengers pass through Regent Centre each year. The new gates—supplied and installed by Scheidt & Bachmann—are designed to strengthen security, enhance customer flow, and provide better revenue protection at one of the network’s busiest suburban interchanges.
As part of the announcement, Ken Cameron, Managing Director at Scheidt & Bachmann UK, highlighted the company’s contribution:
“Together with Nexus, we are proud to support Tyne and Wear Metro in improving safety at their stations and reducing fare evasion attempts. Regent Centre will be the first station on the Metro network to receive Scheidt & Bachmann’s advanced gate solution, the FareGo PG|50 fully integrated into the current fare collection infrastructure.”
The Regent Centre installation is the first new set of ticket gates on the Metro system in over a decade. Nexus is currently conducting a feasibility study to determine which additional stations will be included in the Mayor’s wider investment package for safer, more secure public transport.
