Electronic Interlocking ZSB 2000 – Plant Control System Concept and optimised adaptation

The system controlling of electronic interlocking ZSB 2000 is responsible for safety controlling and supervision of routes, signals, switch points, track lock and according to its dependences. In addition it is responsible for the operation and integration of necessary interfaces. Based on modular system concept and consequently software realisation of functions the ZSB 2000 is very flexible and rapidly adjustable regarding project- and customer requirements. The hardware platform of electronic interlocking ZSB 2000 based on level crossing system BUES 2000. Herewith could be realised and optimised maintenance strategy because by using standardised interfaces and separation of HW and SW will be supported innovative developments in future as well. 

System concept of ZSB 2000 makes possible to install the system in small rooms, concrete houses or carbinets (ca. 5 qm). Furthermore there is no special climatisation necessary.  

The Interlocking ZSB 2000 is approved by EBA, is useable for train working regulations with the DBAG regulation KoRil 408, as an Electronic Interlocking Regional (ESTW-R) and also in the signal-controlled train control operating procedure as Integrated Electronic Control Centre IECC in accordance with the DBAG regulation KoRil 437.

The structure of electronically interlocking ZSB 2000 is classified into three levels.

The locking level of electronic interlocking ZSB 2000 represents the secure data computer centre. The safety data computer is equipped with 3 modules (2 communi-cation modules and 1 track module) in 2 of 2 safety architecture.

The field level represents the safe actuator level of the ZSB 2000 interlocking system. It consists of safe microcomputer systems, each is duplicated, for the controlling and monitoring of a defined function, the systems being located as a rule on the field element itself and thus not in the interlocking system building. The subassemblies of the field level are self-contained units with defined interfaces.

The disposition- and diagnostic level represents in the frame of communication with dispatcher area the connection between station computer and diagnostic centre. This level is equipped with one station computer which proceed and read in all aspects in operation and diagnostic of ZSB 2000.

ZSB 2000 - Hardware components

The hardware components of interlocking control of ZSB 2000 are made by double computer system of interlocking level, the interface subassemblies of field elements and station computer as well. All subassemblies are pluggable equipped with corresponding non-interchangeable devices. There are no functional or project specific data included. The project relevant data are loaded during the booting phase. A changing of hardware components are every time possible without problems and any special requirements.

module processor

In the particular module the module processor realises the control and monitoring functions relevant for safety. Here the duplicated subassemblies of the field level are checked and diagnosis data is made available for the diagnosis level. This subassembly is identical in terms of construction with the level crossing BUES 2000 module processor. 


In addition to the type-approved software, the integrated central program and system store ZPAS contains the project data necessary for the specific case of application. When a system is started, the individual modules are loaded appropriately with program and data. This subassembly is identical in terms of construction with the central program and system store ZPAS of the BUES 2000 level crossing system.

service keyboard

Each electronic interlocking system ZSB 2000 is equipped with a service keyboard. Via a 4-line display and keyboard the service keyboard permits information to be enquired about and the different system reactions to be activated. In addition project data can be read out via a serial interface. This subassembly is identical in terms of construction with the service keyboard BUES 2000.

In/Out subassembly

The In/Out subassembly has 16 inputs and 8 outputs and is used in a module-independent manner where such interfaces (relay controls, key-locked devices) have to be operated. This In/Out subassembly is identical in terms of construction with the In/Out subassembly of the level crossing system BUES 2000.

CANInterface subassembly

The CANInterface subassembly CIF-BG makes possible telegram-oriented communication with "intelligent field elements" (e.g. axle counters, signals, local man manual user interface - auxiliary keys) via the CAN-bus. In order to be able to bridge large distances, the transmission rate of the internal CAN bus is reduced from 200 kBaud to 10 kBaud on the element bus (EBUS). This subassembly is identical in terms of construction with that in the level crossing system BUES 2000.

The switch control subassembly WST-BG is an electronic subassembly for actuating switch mechanisms whereby the changing and monitoring logic is executed as a redundant computer system. Actuation is realised in accordance with the four-wire circuit principle and switching over between the setting and monitoring operating modes is carried out via positively driven, pluggable signal relays (Hengstler). One WST-BG can control up to 4 sets of switches.

station computer

Station computer is equipped with a TFT-Diplay and operation device for maintenance. The station computer is the interface between dispatcher area and diagnostic centre. Functionality of this device is reducing only to the controlling area of corresponding ZSB 2000 system and allowed the route requests. This device is combined with available diagnostic system, which prepared and saved the corresponding data management errors and interruptions for service and maintenance purposes. The station computer is the same hardware platform of diagnostic computer of BUES 2000 technique.       

ZSB 2000 - Functional conditions

The requirements of functional conditions of individual section elements depend on the topology. Specifically application areas are very different. Which section elements are to realise the electronic interlocking ZSB 2000 are working with a safety system core absolutely self dependent. ZSB 2000 control a project dependent on number of field elements realised via standard interfaces. Such kinds of sections elements are e.g.:

ZSB 2000 - Interface

Controlling and supervision of the individual components are realised by standard interfaces. The communication between the levels, the modules and to field elements is realised via CAN-BUS (system bus, modules bus, element bus). Herewith will be full filled the demand in regards to modern electronic interlocking systems to split data and energy. As the result the cabling efforts could be reduced considerably.
